Technical wear
  • Foul weather gear e.g. Musto HPX Ocean or HPX Pro
  • Parka, Chapka (hat with ears cover), Balaclava
  • Gloves (e.g. MAPA) or rubber fisherman’s gloves with removable liners and several pairs of cheap fleece gloves to go inside, mittens
  • Sea boots/shore boots : Neoprene e.g. Muck Boots Arctic models (high cut, non slip, fully insulated, tight fitting around the ankle and sole easy to clean, better than standard sea boots onshore)
  • 3 layers wear :
    • thermal underwear (silk, polypropylene or first layer 100% Merinos wool, avoid cotton), tops and long underwear, large number
    • fleece (fiber pile) pants and jacket
    • windproof Goretex pants and jacket
  • Crocs, boat shoes with soft rubber soles for below decks
  • Warm socks (heavy fleece or wool socks) + silk under socks (several pairs)
  • Sleeping bag - Temperatures 5 - 15 °C preferably with long zipper, liner
Safety
  • Survival/immersion suit for each crew (critical to survive the cold even inside a life raft)
  • Sun glasses : glacier type with side flaps and one spare dark pair, ski goggles or clear goggles for windy blizzard conditions
  • Pharmacy incl. seasick pills Stugeron, Sun block-out cream + lipstick
  • Headlamp incl. red light
  • Grab bag (Personal Location Beacon McMurdo, VHF, survival blankets, ...)
Media
  • Personal photographic equipment
  • Selection of favorite music - iPod/iPhone
  • "Go-Pro" videocam
Miscellaneous
  • Toilet kit/toiletry bag + wipes
  • Personal medical kit including personal medication
  • 1 liter water/isothermal bottle and one pee bottle if necessary
